LAB 5: HYPOTHALAMUS AND LIMBIC SYSTEM, SPECIAL SENSES - OLFACTION AND HEARING

Student Preparation Guide

Objectives

  • Identify the hypothalamus on brain specimens and in micrographs and describe its anatomical boundaries and relationship to surrounding structures.
  • Describe the main functions of the hypothalamus in homeostasis.
  • Identify the major structures of the limbic system (limbic lobe, hippocampus, amygdala) on brain specimens and in micrographs.
  • Describe the main functions of the limbic system in affective-motivational processing, learning and memory.
  • Explain the extended Papez Circuit and localize its component tracts and structures.
  • Describe the blood supply to the hypothalamus, hippocampus and amygdala.
  • Describe the functional anatomy of the olfactory system and localize its component tracts and structures.
